TL;DR -> In 1999 Defiant was in talks with Camel regarding a possible sponsorship for Defiant’s cigarette-smoking-heavy Fall production of Burning Desires by Joan Schenkar. A reporter at the Tribune caught wind of it, misconstrued our Managing Director’s words and published a snooty snarkfest. The gang at Defiant leapt in and did what they do best, they piled into Chris Johnson’s apartment living room, smoked a lot of cigarettes and formulated a measured and appropriate response. Several of them probably smoked a bowl or two afterward. The deal fell through, and the affair was covered in the review of the show by critic Chris Jones.
