by William Shakespeare

at The Viaduct
January 17 – February 22, 2003

“A mixed-up contemporary shebang, full of unruly life… Some of the violence is just plain fabulous.”

Chicago Tribune

War crimes. Hostages. Gang rape. Kidnapping. Racism. Terror–Shakespeare’s bloodiest play sounds like the scroll bar on CNN. When General Titus claims Tamora, Queen of the Goths, as a Roman prisoner, he initiates a cycle of revenge worthy of media frenzy. From severed heads to live burial, Titus Andronicus is Shakespearean to the hilt, and that hilt happens to be buried in the chest of human nature. Director Christopher Johnson returned to The Bard after successfully prying Hamlet and Macbeth from their safe historical context.
